Since 2012, the USAID-funded Leadership, Management, and Governance (LMG) Project has provided in-service leadership, management, and governance skills building courses for more than 1,800 health leaders and managers at all levels of Ethiopia's health system.

Working with Ethiopia's Federal Ministry of Health, the project assessed leadership, management, and governance pre-service curricula, and it found that, like other clinical courses, these courses needed to have practical application sessions to be more effective.

Partnering with eight public universities, the LMG Project helped the universities review their community based education strategies and identify areas to better include leadership, management, and governance practices.

This technical brief describes the key steps and lessons learned about community-based practical leadership, management, and governance exercises, with a focus on helping health and medical science students work in a team environment that supports a community to improve its health and wellbeing.
